ASA expects individuals to respect the league's culture of fair, fun, competitive play. Innapropriate language and rough play will not be tolerated and individuals or teams who cannot adhere to ASA standards or sportsmanship may be asked to leave the league.
Any abusive or threatening behaviours towards another player, fan, referee or administrator will not be tolerated. Fighting will not be tolerated. Any teams or players involved in a fight will be removed from the current league and potentially any future leagues.
1. Futsal is played 5v5 and therefore team roster sizes should be between 8-14.
2. Only registered ASA players are allowed to play on a given team. ASA retains the right to suspend any team playing with unregistered players.
3. Futsal teams must field at least two (2) females at all times.
All players are required to bring a form of identification on each game. NO ID, NO PLAY! (Driver’s license, passport, Visa, etc)
All players must wear shin guards with socks that completely cover them.
Jewelry of any kind is prohibited. Tapping bracelets and earring is not acceptable - they must be removed. A yellow card can be issued for the player who doesn’t follow this rule.
All fouls committed by a team that result in a direct free-kick or a penalty in one half of the game are counted together; these are so-called accumulated fouls. Once a sixth accumulated foul has been committed, teams are awarded a free-kick without a wall on the second penalty mark, which is ten metres from goal and four metres behind the first penalty spot. If the foul was made between the byline and the second penalty mark, the free-kick may be taken closer to the goal. If a match goes to extra time the accumulated fouls from the second half remain valid and any further fouls are added to the tally.
A futsal ball is weighted and has approximately 30% less bounce than a standard soccer ball. The adult league will use a size 4 futsal ball.
Ball in and out of Play
Ball out of play: When it has fully crossed the goal line or touchline; when the game has been stopped by a referee; when the ball hits the ceiling (restart: kick-in at the place closest to where the ball touched the ceiling).
- Lines: Touchlines and goal lines are considered inside the playing area.
- Ball hitting the ceiling: kick-in is from the nearest touchline spot
Games will be played on futsal marked courts with proper boundaries.
Ejections - Players and Coach
- Minimum penalty is the player required to miss the immediate next match
- Maximum penalty is player expulsion from the entire event. League committee must agree.
Players are required to wear shin guards. Players must wear non-marking indoor soccer, futsal, or athletic shoes (e.g. futsal shoes)
Failure to Show and Forfeits
- A game may not start with fewer than four (4) properly uniformed players on each team for a match.
- Once a game has started, it may not continue with fewer than three (3) players
- If a match cannot start or continue because of a team having fewer than the minimum, that team shall forfeit the game
- A team shall have a five (5) minute grace period from the scheduled kick off before the match is awarded to their opponent as a 5-0 win
- In the case of a late start, game length may be adjusted by the referee in order to maintain the tournament schedule.
- Teams that have forfeit a game may not advance beyond the preliminary rounds without the approval of the league committee.
A league match will consist of a 40 minute game with a running clock, consisting of two 20 minute halves with a 3 minute halftime.
Goalkeepers and Goal Clearance
A goal clearance must be thrown (and not kicked) and the goalkeeper cannot touch the ball again until it has crossed midfield or a member of the opposing team has touched the ball. A goalkeeper may throw across midcourt.
Goalkeepers may touch the ball with their hands inside the penalty area, a semi-circle with a six-metre radius. They can move anywhere on the pitch and are allowed to throw the ball out into the opposition half. If the goalkeeper has the ball he must play it to a team-mate within four seconds, regardless of whether the ball is in his hands or at his feet.
Restarts after the ball has gone out of play, the ball is kicked into play from the touchline and from corners. The ball must be placed stationary and the feet of the player taking the kick-in must not cross the line. The whole foot can not cross the line.
Misconduct and Fouls
Yellow card - referees will imediately substitute a player out for a minimum of two (2) minutes (his or her team can make a substitute and DOES NOT have to play down a player for the two minutes).
Red card - A player that receives a red card or two yellow cards in one game is automatically suspended for the remainder of current game and following two games. After receiving a hard or soft red card the player must leave the court premises within one minute without substitution. The player’s team finishes the game with one less player on the court. Should a player receive a red card during the last game of the season, that player will be suspended for the next scheduled ASA Adult Futsal game the following next season.
A substitute player may replace a sent-off player and enter the pitch two full minutes after the sending-off. They may, however, enter the pitch before the two minutes have elapsed should their team concede a goal while a player down.
Multiple red cards in one season will be grounds for suspension - without refund - from the league.
All fouls will be followed by an indirect kick unless otherwise noted by the referee.
There is no offside rule in Futsal.
One (1) passback to the goalkeeper per possession. A goalkeeper throw counts as the 1 passback per possession. The goalkeeper cannot touch the ball again until it has crossed midfield or a member of the opposing team has touched the ball.
To be taken from the penalty mark on the mid-point of the six (6) meter line. All players must be out of the penalty area, and the players of the opposing team must also be at least 5 meters from the penalty spot. The kicker shall not play the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player.
Playoff Games & Penalty Kicks
Playoff games must have a winner and will be decided by penalty kicks if tied after regulation. The winner of a coin toss will have the option of choosing to kick first or last.
- Choose any 3 players from roster, kick from PK spot on court (6 meters, approximately 20 feet).
- If additional PKs are needed, teams go 1 by 1 with new players.
- No player may take a second shot until every player on roster has taken a PK, including goalkeepers.
At least one (1) referee will be scheduled to each game. They will enforce the laws of the game to the best of their ability.
Goals may not be scored directly on restarts, which include:
- At the start of the game
- To start the second half
- After goals are scored
- From kick-ins (touchline)
Slide tackles are not allowed in Futsal but players are allowed to slide on the field (e.g., to stop a ball from going out of play, to direct a pass towards the net, etc.) For a player sliding to be considered a foul, the tackler’s opponent must be in possession of the ball. Referees will not give a foul for a slide if the opponent does not have possession of the ball.
Players must enter and leave the court from the designated spot by their team bench. “Flying substitutions” allow coaches and players to enter and exit as they please, however the field player must exit before the substituting player can enter. Any of the substitutes may change places with the goalkeeper without informing the referees or waiting for a stoppage in the match. If a current player on the field wants to switch places with the goalkeeper he or she needs to wait for a stoppage and inform the referee. There is no limit to the number of substitutions you can make in a game.
Any player required to leave the pitch to correct his or her equipment must not re-enter without the permission of the referees.
Teams start the game positioned in their teams defensive half. Teams will switch benches at half-time to stay in your defensive half.
The 4 Second Rule
On kick-ins, free kicks, goal clearances and corner kicks the player in possession of the ball has four (4) seconds to restart play which the referee will count with fingers in the air. If play is not restarted within four (4) seconds an indirect kick will be awarded to the opposing team. The goalkeeper is not allowed to control the ball for more than 4 seconds in his/her own half.
In regular season play a tie will stand at the end of regulation time. In playoff games, a shootout will take place at the end of regulation if the game is tied.
Each team is allowed one 30-second time out per half. A team that does not request a time-out in the ﬁrst half of the match is only entitled to one time-out during the second half. There are no time-outs in extra time.
The 5 Yard Rule
On corners and kick-ins players are required to keep 5 yards from the player in possession of the ball. Players must immediately give 5 yards.
League Standings will be based on the following:
- Win = 3 points
- Tie = 1 point
- Loss = 0 points
Ending Periods of Play:
The timekeeper indicates the end of each 20-minute period with an acoustic signal. After hearing the timekeeper’s acoustic signal, one of the referees announces the end of the period or match with his whistle, bearing in mind the following:
If the ball has been played towards one of the goals before the timekeeper sounds the acoustic signal, the referees must wait for the kick to end before announcing the end of the period or match with a whistle. The period or match ends when:
If an infringement has been committed during this period that is sanctioned with a direct free kick after the fifth accumulated foul of one of the teams, or sanctioned with a penalty kick, the period ends when:
